AI search terminology

Citation frequency

What is Citation frequency?

Citation frequency is a measure of how often an AI system names or links a given source across a set of relevant prompts.

Who uses the term Citation frequency?

Citation frequency is used by measurement tool vendors and by practitioners reporting on AI visibility to clients. It is one of the few metrics in this field with an agreed shape.

Related measures include share of answer and entity confidence, both of which attempt to quantify the same underlying question.

Citation frequency measures an outcome. AEO, GEO and LLM seeding are methods intended to move it.

The metric is sensitive to prompt selection and to model version, so figures are only comparable within a consistent test set. A citation frequency quoted without its prompt set is not a meaningful number.
